Even though I’m an exercise scientist, I still have the same lingering aches and pains from working out.

My name is Stephanie Wield, I’m an exercise scientist and kinesiologist here in Massachusetts.

For over 20 years, I’ve worked with athletes of all calibers, and to rehabilitate individuals with injuries and physical challenges.

I’ve got over 20,000 hours in helping people strengthen, heal, rebuild and fine tune their bodies.

Whatever the problem or goal, I have experience doing it.

But recently, I became my own patient.  You see, I try to stay in the best fitness shape I can.

Of course, I always want to look and feel my best. And stay healthy and strong as long as I can. Plus, my job can be physically rigorous.  SoI need to stay in good shape.

But the older I get, the more I notice I’m often sore the next day.  And I work out every day. So unless I skip a day, I am basically sore every day.

And to make matters worse, recently I strained a muscle in my back in a fitness class.

Normally, after a day or two, a pulled muscle would heal on its own.  But this time, it was a week of handfuls of ibuprofen, a massage gun and a heating pad.

And I know exactly why … The older I get the harder my body finds it to recover.

Even if you're doing everything right — stretching, sleeping, eating enough protein — and you're still waking up stiff, still dragging two days after a workout, still watching your progress stall ...

Let me explain why … And what you can do about it.

The moment I started paying attention to recovery differently ...

As I mentioned, I’ve been working in sports medicine for over two decades.

I’ve worked with weekend 5K runners and masters triathletes. I’ve treated recreational lifters in their 40s who train harder than athletes half their age. I’ve sat across from active adults who do everything right — consistent training, healthy eating, eight hours of sleep — Who still feel like they’re falling apart.

And for years, I told them what the textbook told me to say ...

More protein. More sleep. More rest days.  Sauna.  Ice bath.

Some of them got better. But a lot of them didn't.

It wasn't until I started looking more closely at what actually happens inside muscle tissue during and after exercise — And what the body needs to complete that repair — That I understood what I had been missing.

And what most of my patients had been quietly running out of for years.

First, if your body used to bounce back, and now it doesn't, you’re not imagining it.

If you used to be sore for a day and now it's three ...

If you used to train hard on Saturday and feel fine by Monday, and now Thursday still feels rough ...

If your muscles and joints ache longer, and in ways they never used to ...

If you feel wiped out after workouts that should energize you ...

If you’re sleeping enough, but waking up feeling like you never slept at all ...

You’re not being weak.

You’re not just "getting old."

And you’re not pushing too hard.  At least, not in the way you think.

Something specific is happening inside your body that no amount of heating pads, menthol creams, foam rolling or extra rest days will fix.

Once you understand what it is, the next year of your training is going to look completely different from the last three.

Here’s why ….

I had a patient who finally made me look harder ...

Marcus came into my office last fall.  He’s  54 and a former college swimmer. He still trains six days a week … cycling, lifting, and weekend trail runs. He’s a guy who built his identity around staying active, strong and capable.

His nutrition was dialed in. His sleep was consistent. His program was not too much. On paper, he was doing everything right.

But he hadn't had a pain-free week in over a year.

His legs felt "like concrete" for days after long rides. His shoulders ached through every lifting session. He was waking up at night with cramps in his calves. And his performance had been declining for months despite the same training load.

"I've tried everything," he said. "My bloodwork is normal. My doctor says I'm in great shape. But I feel like my body has just stopped cooperating."

That night I did a deep dive on everything I could find on the physiology of muscle repair, inflammation regulation, and recovery, specifically in athletes over 40.

What I found changed how I think about every active patient I see.

Here’s what no one tells you about why you're not recovering ...

You already know that exercise breaks muscle down. That's the point of working out. You stress the tissue, the body repairs it bigger and stronger.

But what most people — and even, most physicians — don't fully appreciate is how much that repair process depends on one specific mineral.

Not protein. Not creatine. Not BCAAs.

Magnesium.

Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical processes in the human body. But inside muscle tissue, it’s doing several things that are absolutely essential to recovery:

It regulates the calcium-magnesium pump that controls muscle contraction and muscle release. Without enough magnesium, muscles can’t fully relax after contraction. Which is why you get cramps, why you stay tight, and why soreness lingers.

It controls the inflammatory response that cleans up damaged tissue and begins repair. Too little magnesium, and inflammation becomes dysregulated.  It over reacts, stays elevated longer, and the clean-up function never kicks in.

It activates ATP, the energy fuel your cells use to do everything. Including rebuilding new muscle fibers. Low magnesium means low cellular energy, which means repair slows to a crawl.

It regulates cortisol. Which is the stress hormone that — when elevated — actively breaks down muscle tissue and suppresses recovery.

It supports deep, restorative sleep. Which is when 90% of your actual physical muscle repair happens.

So when magnesium is adequate, your body goes through the recovery cycle efficiently. Inflammation eases. Muscles repair and rebuild. And you wake up ready to go.

But when magnesium is depleted, your whole repair and recovery system slows to a crawl. You don’t get any advance notice of this. It just quietly makes everything you do harder and more painful.

And ironically, active people are the most likely to be Magnesium deficient.

Here is the harsh truth.  The more active you are, the more magnesium you burn through.

Every time you sweat, you lose magnesium. Every time your body triggers an inflammatory response to damaged muscle, it burns through magnesium.

Every time you experience stress — including the positive stress of strength training — cortisol depletes magnesium levels.

Active adults in their 40s and 50s lose magnesium at an accelerated rate compared to inactive people.

And they’re trying to replenish it from a diet that delivers only a fraction of what it once did. Modern soil depletion means that even a clean, whole-foods diet gives you significantly less magnesium than the same diet would have provided a 100 years ago.

The result is a slow, silent magnesium depletion that builds over years. And it results in all the lingering pain and soreness  you've been blaming on age and overtraining.

This cycle keeps you stuck …

Low magnesium doesn't just cause pain and soreness, it creates a never-ending cycle.

You train hard … You deplete magnesium …

Then low magnesium activates your inflammatory response, so recovery takes longer.

Longer recovery means more lasting fatigue, which means worse sleep ...

Poor sleep burns through more magnesium and elevates cortisol. Which then breaks down the same muscle tissue you're trying to rebuild.

And the cycle repeats itself. Every month it gets a little worse. Every year the gap between how hard you train and how fast you recover gets wider.

This is why rest days don't fix it. This is why extra protein doesn't fix it. This is why you can sleep eight hours and still wake up feeling exhausted.

You’re not recovering poorly because you're training too hard ...

You're recovering poorly because your body is missing the ONE most important thing it needs to complete the process and stop the cycle.

This is what a Magnesium deficiency feels like …

Soreness that drags on for three to five days. Delayed onset muscle soreness becomes normal. It can last most of the week as your inflammatory response fails to stop. This is a direct sign of magnesium deficiency.

Muscle cramps and tightness that won't release. Magnesium controls the calcium-magnesium pump that tells muscles to let go. Without it, they stay partially contracted. Stretching helps temporarily, but it doesn't fix the underlying problem.

Workouts feel harder than they should. ATP requires magnesium to activate. When magnesium drops, your muscles generate energy less efficiently.  Which means the same effort feels harder and performance declines.

Joint aches that feel worse than the work outs you're doing. Magnesium plays a role in modulating inflammatory signals that affect joint tissue. A depleted system runs hotter, longer.

Muscle pulls that don’t heal. When you’re in a low magnesium cycle, muscle pulls that usually get better in a few days, can take weeks to repair.

Poor sleep that doesn't leave you rested. Magnesium converts serotonin into melatonin and activates the GABA receptors that quiet your nervous system and help you into a deep sleep. Without it, you might fall asleep — but your body doesn't repair. And repair is why sleep matters active adults.

Waking up stiff. Your body should repair overnight. So if you're waking up stiff instead of recovered, your body didn't finish the job. Often because it didn't have the raw material to do it.

Energy that never fully returns between sessions. Cellular energy production stalls without magnesium. No amount of sleep or calories can compensate. So you end up under-recovered, even when you think you're managing it.

A decline in performance. Not a crash or an injury. Just a gradual slow down of what you used to be able to do, and how quickly you could do it again.

These are not separate problems. They are ALL from the same deficiency, showing up in different systems of your body.

Why your bloodwork keeps coming back normal …

Everyone I work with tells the same story ...

Their blood panels look fine. Their inflammatory markers are acceptable. Nothing looks obviously wrong.

But they feel terrible, sore, tired and defeated.

The bloodwork isn't lying. It just isn't measuring the right thing.

Only about 1% of the magnesium in your body is in your blood. The rest is stored in your bones, muscles, and soft tissue … Where routine lab panels can't see it.

So your serum magnesium comes back normal. And your doctor tells you you're in great shape. So you go home with no answers, and the conclusion that your aches and pains and slow recovery must just be what getting older feels like.

But it isn't.

Today’s medical system was built to catch diseases. It was not built to catch a “simple” key mineral that has been slowly leaking out of your active body for a decade.

That's the gap where most active adults fall through.

Now, here’s the problem with most Magnesium Supplements …

If you've tried magnesium and felt nothing, here’s why ...

More than 90% of magnesium supplements sold in the United States … Including many that are marketed specifically to athletes … Contain Magnesium Oxide.

This is the cheapest form to manufacture, and it has an absorption rate of less than 4%.

That means a 400mg capsule delivers only 16mg of usable magnesium to your body. The rest just makes you feel bloated and causes digestive issues.

Many brands print "Magnesium Glycinate" or "Magnesium Complex" on the front of the package, then list Magnesium Oxide in the fine print on the back.  So be careful.

The front is marketing. The back is the truth.

There are also big differences within the better forms. Magnesium Glycinate and Magnesium Bisglycinate are NOT the same compound …

Bisglycinate is magnesium that is bonded to two glycine molecules.  It offers superior protection through digestion, and crosses the blood-brain barrier, meaning it reaches your nervous system and brain tissue where recovery signaling is regulated.

So if you tried magnesium, and it didn't work, it was likely the wrong form.

The ONLY kind that can rebuild and help you recoverMagnesium Bisglycinate.

This special form does two critical things …

One: It protects the magnesium through your digestive system, giving you close to 90% absorption … Compared to under 4% for Magnesium Oxide.

Two: It crosses the blood-brain barrier, to reach your nervous system directly. This is where cortisol regulation, sleep quality, and recovery signaling are controlled.

And glycine itself is very important. It’s an amino acid that directly supports your collagen synthesis. The structural protein in your tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue absorbs the most stress from training, and is slowest to repair.

So Magnesium Bisglycinate isn't just delivering a mineral. It delivers it in a form that supports the specific tissues most worn out by consistent exercise.

Magnesium Bisglucinate is the form you need to:

  • Shut off the inflammatory cycle that makes you sore
  • Relax muscles at the cellular level
  • Restore ATP production so cells have the energy to repair themselves
  • Rebalance cortisol so your body stops breaking itself down overnight
  • Settle into deep sleep so recovery actually happens while you rest
  • Support connective tissue repair with collagen

And it does all this NOT in weeks … Most people feel a huge difference in just five to seven days.

Real People. Real Results.  See what they’re saying …

"I've been lifting for 20 years and the last two years my recovery has been brutal. I just assumed it was age. But three weeks in, and I'm training Tuesday and feeling fine by Thursday for the first time in years. I don't know why my doctor never told me about this." — Greg T., 48, Ohio

"I tried magnesium twice before and felt nothing. Then tried this because a friend wouldn't stop talking about it. Within two weeks, the cramping in my legs at night was gone. And I was actually sleeping all night. The difference from the other brands is real." — Carol M., 52, Oregon

"I do a masters swim program four days a week and my shoulders have ached for two years. My doctor couldn't find anything structurally wrong. After six weeks on this, the chronic ache is noticeably better. I think it was just inflammation that never resolved. I wish I'd figured this out two years ago." — Dennis R., 57, Florida

"I'm a weekend runner. Nothing crazy, just trying to stay in shape. After long runs I used to be wrecked for three or four days. Now I'm back to normal in a day. I feel like I recovered to my 30s in my 50s." — Susan A., 54, Colorado

You don’t have to live in constant pain anymore.

Imagine finishing a hard Saturday session and waking up Sunday ready to move pain free.

Imagine your legs feeling loose Monday morning instead of stiff and sore.

Picture training consistently for three weeks straight without the cumulative pain that used to force you to back off.

Picture sleeping deeply enough that you wake up genuinely rested. And notice that adequate sleep also boosts your energy, mood, patience, and performance.

Imagine ditching the soreness that used to sideline you for days, easing in just hours.

Picture your joints feeling quieter. Your muscles working the way they're supposed to. And your body ready for your training instead of resisting it.

This is what happens when you boost the magnesium that you’re missing.

It’s time to put it back in a form it can actually use.
